What happened
IIT Hyderabad's Department of Chemical Engineering launched two new MTech programmes: AI and Machine Learning in Chemical Engineering, and Computational Chemical Engineering. These are India's first MTech offerings integrating artificial intelligence and computational modelling with chemical engineering, per the university. The programmes address the increasing use of digital tools, including AI, advanced simulations, and data analytics, across chemical, pharmaceutical, energy, and advanced materials industries. Admissions will commence in the upcoming academic cycle via the Common Online Admission Portal and GATE-based selection, preparing graduates for roles in process optimisation, materials discovery, and smart manufacturing.
Why it matters
Procurement teams and R&D leaders in chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and energy will gain access to graduates equipped with combined domain expertise and advanced computational skills, accelerating innovation in process optimisation and materials discovery. The new MTech programmes standardise a new baseline for engineering talent, requiring existing teams to integrate AI and simulation capabilities to remain competitive. This follows India's recent focus on boosting AI infrastructure investment, creating a pipeline of skilled professionals for emerging digital industries.
