What happened
The Five Eyes intelligence alliance, comprising Australia, the US, UK, New Zealand, and Canada, warned that advanced AI models will transform cyber capabilities, posing a significant threat within months, not years. The agencies stated AI accelerates the speed, scale, and sophistication of cyber threats. This follows US President Donald Trump blocking foreign nationals from using Anthropic’s Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models in June, which the company subsequently shut down.
Why it matters
Cybersecurity teams face an accelerated threat landscape where risk assumptions become outdated in months, not years. Advanced AI models exploit existing weaknesses: unnecessary internet connectivity, weak identity and access controls, legacy systems, and sluggish patching loops. This follows the US blocking foreign access to Anthropic's frontier models, underscoring immediate, tangible risks. Procurement teams must prioritise foundational cybersecurity practices and empower cyber leaders with resources, as failure to act quickly will lead to operational and strategic disadvantage.
