What happened
Qualcomm is in discussions to provide custom chip-design services to China's ByteDance, parent of TikTok, according to four sources familiar with the matter. These chips would partially utilise technology from AlphaWave Semi, a high-speed connectivity specialist Qualcomm acquired last year. The talks involve designing video processing units (VPUs), with a goal of starting mass production by the end of the year. ByteDance has previously developed AI chips for inference tasks and custom central processing units (CPUs).
Why it matters
This collaboration signals Qualcomm's strategic expansion beyond its core smartphone market into the data centre chip sector, diversifying its revenue streams. For platform engineers and procurement teams, this potential partnership offers a new avenue for custom silicon, reducing reliance on established providers like Broadcom and Marvell in the ASIC market. The engagement also highlights continued US tech firm interest in China despite ongoing US-China friction over AI chip technology, which has impacted other major chipmakers.
