Perplexity AI has made its Comet AI browser available to all users at no cost. This move aims to position Comet as a viable alternative to established browsers and search engines. Comet is built on the Chromium framework, ensuring compatibility with Chrome extensions and a familiar user experience. It features an AI sidebar that acts as a personal assistant, summarising articles, drafting emails and automating tasks.
Additionally, Perplexity has introduced a new 'background assistant' for its Max subscribers. This feature allows the browser to handle multiple tasks in the background, providing real-time updates without interrupting the user's primary browsing session. Comet also offers tools for content creation, shopping, travel planning, financial tracking and sports updates. The browser uses AI to suggest relevant content based on user behaviour and browsing habits.
Comet's key features include deep research integration, real-time information processing with source citations and cross-platform synergy. It also offers agentic AI capabilities to automate tasks like booking meetings and comparing prices. Perplexity aims to make AI-led browsing a daily default, challenging dominant browsers and search engines.
