Meta has acquired PlayAI, an artificial intelligence company specialising in voice technology. The acquisition will see PlayAI's team and technology integrated into Meta's AI division, enhancing Meta's AI assistant and devices like smart glasses. PlayAI's technology focuses on creating natural, lifelike conversational AI.

Meta is investing heavily in its AI capabilities, demonstrated by its recent investment in Scale AI and recruitment of AI researchers from other companies. The acquisition of PlayAI could allow Meta to integrate advanced voice features into its products, including custom, lifelike voices for avatars in VR and voiceovers for video creators. PlayAI supports over 30 languages, potentially helping Meta engage with billions of users globally.

PlayAI's voice cloning tech can bring natural speech to Meta’s AI assistants on WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. Meta is aiming to rival other AI developers and is working towards Artificial General Intelligence.
