What happened
Noam Shazeer, Google's Vice President of Engineering and Gemini co-lead, departed Google to join OpenAI, announcing his move on X. Shazeer, a co-author of the seminal 2017 "Attention Is All You Need" paper that introduced the transformer architecture, previously left Google in 2021 to co-found Character.AI. Google rehired Shazeer in August 2024 as part of a $2.7 billion licensing agreement for Character.AI's technology, a deal that reportedly yielded Shazeer an equity stake between $750 million and $1 billion. He now shifts to OpenAI just over 18 months later.
