What happened
Google introduced new security measures for Chrome's upcoming agentic AI features, powered by Gemini, enabling multi-step tasks such as form filling and order placement. Gemini Nano, a smaller AI model, will operate directly on devices to block scams, reduce unwanted notifications, and simplify password management. Chrome will also utilise Gemini for real-time scam detection, identifying fake virus warnings and phishing attempts. These capabilities are available through Google Workspace, incorporating enterprise-grade data protections.
Why it matters
The integration of on-device AI for security functions and agentic task execution introduces a control gap, shifting certain security responsibilities to the endpoint and user. This increases exposure for IT security and compliance teams to less visible AI-driven actions and data processing at the user level. It raises due diligence requirements for endpoint policy enforcement and verification of data residency within Google Workspace environments, impacting platform operators and data governance.
