What happened

Amazon introduced Alexa+ Greetings, integrating conversational AI into Ring doorbells. This system leverages Ring's AI Video Descriptions to analyse visitors based on attire, actions, and items, enabling Alexa to distinguish visitor types such as delivery personnel or salespeople. Users customise interactions via the Alexa app or Echo devices, setting responses for scenarios like package delivery instructions or declining salespeople, with support for follow-up questions. This feature is compatible with Ring Video Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen) and Ring Video Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen) and requires a Ring Home Premium Plan. It is currently rolling out to Early Access users in the US and Canada.

Why it matters

The introduction of conversational AI in Ring doorbells increases exposure for platform operators and compliance teams to automated, context-aware interactions occurring at the perimeter. This reduces visibility into the real-time content and intent of these automated exchanges, raising due diligence requirements for monitoring and auditing interactions that may involve personal data or specific instructions. The burden falls on IT security and compliance to ensure these automated responses align with privacy policies and operational protocols, particularly concerning data handling and visitor management.
