Meta is introducing an AI-powered feature that suggests edits for photos saved on users' devices. This tool analyses images directly from the camera roll, even those not yet shared on the platform. The feature, currently available on an opt-in basis in the U.S. and Canada, provides recommendations for enhancements, collages, and restyling.
When creating a Story, users may see a prompt requesting permission for 'cloud processing'. If granted, Facebook will regularly upload images to its servers, using data such as time, location, and objects to generate content suggestions. Meta assures users that these suggestions are private and won't be used for ad targeting. However, opting in means agreeing to Meta's AI Terms of Service, which allows the company to analyse media and facial features.
While Meta states that unpublished photos will not be used to train AI models, experts have raised concerns about data retention, access, and potential misuse. Users are encouraged to review privacy settings and understand the terms before enabling the feature.
