What happened
Music streaming service TIDAL implemented a new policy, effective July 15, 2026, to address AI-generated music. The company stated this policy prevents fully AI-generated tracks from earning royalties or being eligible for direct-to-fan sales. TIDAL will also use automated tools to remove AI music impersonating artists and will apply a visible "AI" badge to identified 100% AI-generated content, as announced by Tony Gervino, TIDAL EVP and Editor-in-Chief.
Why it matters
This policy shifts unit economics for AI music creators, directly impacting their revenue streams by blocking royalties and direct-to-fan sales for fully AI-generated content. For platform engineers and content strategists, TIDAL's use of automated tools and visible "AI" badges establishes a new technical and transparency standard for content moderation. This contrasts with platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, which label AI content, potentially influencing future industry-wide approaches to AI music regulation.
