What happened
Ford rehired over 350 veteran engineers, internally dubbed “gray beards,” across the past three years to correct quality issues stemming from its aggressive AI adoption strategy, which cost the company billions of dollars. These specialists now lead quality reviews and train AI systems, after Ford's reliance on AI-driven inspection systems proved insufficient for complex problems, lacking nuanced judgment. This shift contributed to Ford ranking as the top mainstream brand in the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey, a first in 16 years. Ford will integrate AI with human oversight, according to COO Kumar Galhotra and VP Charles Poon.
Why it matters
Reliance on AI without human oversight degrades product quality and increases operational costs. For platform engineers and procurement teams, this demonstrates that AI systems alone cannot replace experienced human judgment in complex quality control, leading to billions in losses and increased recall rates. The mechanism involves AI's inability to handle nuanced problems, a constraint overcome by reintroducing human expertise to identify failure points and improve AI training data. This follows recent reports of AI tools causing worker isolation and low morale.
