India CDS: AI Transforms Warfare

8 March 2026

What happened

India's Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan stated at the 11th Raisina Dialogue that artificial intelligence and autonomous systems will influence future warfare, requiring large amounts of energy. Chauhan linked AI's energy demands to nuclear power for data centres, supporting timely and accurate combat decisions. Philippines Chief of Staff General Romeo S Brawner Jr. echoed these sentiments, noting AI's importance for effective defence. Chauhan acknowledged India is taking "baby steps" in military AI adoption, with dedicated power for military AI systems a future requirement.

Why it matters

National defence strategies will increasingly integrate AI-driven autonomous systems, shifting military might from traditional platforms to data, networks, and intelligence. This transition demands extensive energy infrastructure, linking AI adoption directly to nuclear power development for data centres. Defence strategists must prioritise AI integration for timely decision-making, while energy infrastructure planners face new requirements for dedicated power sources to support military AI systems. Procurement teams will need to secure both AI capabilities and the energy resources to operate them.
