What happened
Google rolled out Personal Intelligence to all free-tier US users, integrating it across AI Mode in Search, the Gemini app, and Gemini in Chrome. This expansion connects the AI with users' Google apps, including Gmail, Photos, and YouTube, for tailored responses like shopping recommendations or travel planning. Users retain control over app connections; Google states it will not train its AI models on personal data from these apps. This capability was previously exclusive to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers and remains limited to personal Google accounts.
Why it matters
Expanded access to Personal Intelligence shifts privacy and data control for individual users. The system integrates directly with personal data from Gmail, Photos, and YouTube, requiring users to actively manage permissions. For privacy officers and data governance teams, this highlights the need to monitor how similar "personal intelligence" features evolve within enterprise AI tools, particularly regarding data residency and model training policies. Google's stated mechanism of not training models directly on personal data from connected apps sets a precedent for highly personalised AI.
