Google is integrating its Gemini AI model directly into the Chrome browser, enabling users to access AI assistance for tasks such as summarising content, clarifying concepts, and answering questions based on the current webpage. Gemini in Chrome is accessible via the Gemini icon in the Chrome toolbar or through a customisable keyboard shortcut.
Initially available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US with English as their set language, Gemini in Chrome is now rolling out to all Chrome users on Mac and Windows in the US. It will also be available to Google Workspace customers with enterprise-grade data protections. Gemini in Chrome can work across multiple tabs to consolidate information and has deeper integration with Google Calendar, Tasks, Drive, Docs/Sheets/Slides, Maps, and YouTube. Agentic capabilities are expected to be introduced in the coming months, allowing Gemini to handle tedious tasks such as booking appointments and ordering groceries.
Gemini in Chrome is designed to provide a more proactive and intelligent browsing experience, helping users to be more productive and stay safer online. Google emphasises that users are in control, with Gemini activating only when they choose to use it.
