Mistral AI, a French artificial intelligence startup founded in 2023, develops both open-source and proprietary large language models. The company's models are designed to provide a European alternative to AI systems dominated by the United States and China. Mistral AI's models are categorised into general purpose, specialist and research models. Its general-purpose models are text-in, text-out LLMs suitable for natural language processing and text generation. Specialist models are trained for specific tasks and domains, while research models have no restrictions on deployment environments or commercial use.
Mistral AI is also developing Le Chat, an AI assistant tailored for European users, featuring capabilities like Deep Research, voice interaction, and a refreshed image editor. It is designed to understand natural language with multilingual reasoning and voice recognition. The company is nearing the close of a funding round that could raise $2.3 billion, potentially valuing it at $14 billion. This investment would position Mistral AI as one of Europe's most valuable tech startups.
The company differentiates itself by releasing open-source tools that allow developers to build and customise AI applications. This approach fosters a community-driven ecosystem, appealing to enterprises wary of vendor lock-in. Mistral AI has partnered with Nvidia to build AI data centres in France, utilising Nvidia's GPUs.
