Stripe and OpenAI have collaborated to enable purchases directly within ChatGPT for US users. This integration allows users to buy from Etsy merchants and soon from Shopify merchants, without leaving the chat interface. The system is underpinned by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), co-developed by Stripe and OpenAI. ACP is an open standard that facilitates communication between businesses and AI agents, providing a blueprint for integrating checkouts with AI assistants.
When a user is ready to make a purchase, they are presented with a Stripe-powered checkout within the ChatGPT interface. Stripe then issues a Shared Payment Token (SPT), which allows ChatGPT to initiate payment without exposing the user's payment credentials. This token is specific to the merchant and cart total, enhancing security. The merchant then processes the transaction using the token.
Stripe aims to optimise commerce for AI agents, similar to how it has done for human buyers. The ACP standard allows businesses to sell through AI agents while maintaining control over their brand, customer relationships and existing systems. The collaboration intends to expand access to more businesses and consumers across more regions.
