Microsoft Edge has launched 'Copilot Mode', an experimental, AI-powered feature designed to enhance web browsing. This opt-in mode integrates chat, search, and navigation into a single input box, streamlining the user experience. Copilot can analyse content across multiple open tabs, enabling users to compare options, summarise information, and perform tasks more efficiently.
With user permission, Copilot Mode can access browsing history and credentials to complete actions such as booking reservations or managing errands. Voice recognition is also integrated, allowing users to interact with Copilot through voice commands. Microsoft emphasises that user data is protected with clear visual cues indicating when Copilot is viewing or listening. Copilot Mode is available for free for a limited time on Windows and Mac.
This move positions Edge as an AI-driven browser, directly competing with Google Chrome and emerging AI browsers. Microsoft aims to transform the browsing experience by anticipating user needs and orchestrating web surfing through AI. The company highlights that users retain full control over Copilot's access and actions within the browser.
