Disney has issued a cease and desist letter to Google, alleging 'massive' copyright infringement related to the unauthorised use of its intellectual property in Google's Gemini AI. Disney claims Google's AI models are reproducing and distributing copyrighted characters and works without permission, essentially operating as a 'virtual vending machine' for Disney's content. They also allege that Google is falsely implying Disney's endorsement by branding infringing images with the Gemini logo.
Disney's legal team asserts that Google has failed to implement measures to prevent copyright infringement, despite readily available solutions. Disney says that Google is profiting from the unlawful exploitation of its copyrighted works by integrating AI features across platforms used by billions of consumers. Disney had previously raised these concerns with Google, but claims the infringement has only increased.
Disney is demanding Google cease all copyright violations and disclose any Disney content used in AI training. The move comes as Disney also announced a deal with OpenAI to license its characters for AI videos, highlighting a complex legal and ethical landscape surrounding AI and intellectual property.
