OpenAI is developing an AI device, in collaboration with Jony Ive, designed to offer a more peaceful and focused user experience compared to smartphones. Sam Altman envisions a device that promotes calm and reduces distractions, contrasting with the constant notifications and overwhelming nature of current mobile technology. The device aims to intelligently filter information and support users without demanding constant attention.
The device will not rely on a screen and will not be a wearable like glasses or earbuds. It is designed to be discreet and personal, integrating seamlessly into daily life. Altman and Ive aim for the device to feel natural and intuitive, almost like an extension of the user's thoughts. Prototypes exist, and the launch is expected within two years.
OpenAI has been building a hardware team, recruiting engineers from Apple. The goal is to create a new type of personal computer that enhances life without overwhelming it, marking a shift towards ambient, agentic computing.
