Mark Zuckerberg is prioritising the pursuit of artificial superintelligence, despite acknowledging potential safety risks. Meta has launched a dedicated 'superintelligence group' to accelerate the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). The company believes that achieving superintelligence outweighs the risks.
Zuckerberg envisions 'personal superintelligence' augmenting individual capabilities, differentiating Meta from competitors focused on automating work. Meta's AI strategy appears to be taking shape around this concept, aiming to deliver superintelligence through augmented and virtual reality.
However, Meta's push coincides with increasing regulatory scrutiny, particularly from the EU, which emphasises mitigating 'systemic risk' for advanced AI systems. Meta is also spending billions on AI capabilities. Some experts are cautioning that unchecked development could lead to the extinction of humanity. Despite these concerns, Meta is aggressively recruiting from competitors and academic institutions to bolster its AGI efforts.
