More than 800 public figures, including politicians, tech experts, and celebrities, are advocating for a global prohibition on the development of artificial superintelligence (ASI). This call for a ban aims to prevent the creation of AI systems that surpass human intelligence across all cognitive tasks until it can be ensured that the technology can be deployed safely and controllably.
The statement, organised by the Future of Life Institute (FLI), highlights concerns about the potential risks of advanced AI systems. Signatories include AI pioneers, Nobel laureates, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and even former political figures. The group is urging for a prohibition until there is broad scientific consensus and strong public support.
This appeal arrives alongside polling data indicating that a significant portion of the American public agrees with the need for caution. A majority believe superintelligence should only be developed after confirmation of safety and controllability, with many supporting strong regulation.
