Apple has reportedly shifted its focus from developing a lighter, more affordable version of the Vision Pro to accelerating the development of AI-powered smart glasses. This strategic move aims to better compete with Meta, which has already released several iterations of its smart glasses.
Apple is said to be working on at least two models of smart glasses. The first, codenamed N50, will pair with an iPhone and is expected to launch in 2027. It will lack its own display and rely heavily on voice interaction and AI. The second model will feature an integrated display and is slated for release in 2028, though Apple is trying to expedite its development. These glasses will include cameras, microphones, and health-tracking capabilities. The updated glasses will come in a variety of styles and colours, and will be powered by a new Apple chip.
This shift in strategy does not mean the end for the Vision Pro. Apple is still expected to release a refreshed version of the headset with an M5 chip. The company's long-term goal is to release augmented reality glasses that could eventually replace smartphones.
