What happened
Anthropic launched a $1.5 billion enterprise AI venture with investors including Blackstone and Goldman Sachs. OpenAI is reportedly raising over $4 billion for "The Development Company," valued at $10 billion. Google Cloud partnered with Vista Equity Partners and CVC, exploring arrangements with Blackstone, KKR, and EQT. These frontier AI firms are shifting beyond model sales and APIs, embedding "forward-deployed engineers" to directly implement, orchestrate, and transform enterprise workflows.
Why it matters
Commoditised IT services face significant pressure as frontier AI firms directly enter enterprise implementation. This shift, where AI companies embed engineers and automate tasks, challenges the labour-centric economics of traditional outsourcing. HCLTech already flagged a 2-3 percent annual deflationary impact from AI efficiencies, with sector-wide pricing pressure estimated at 3-3.5 percent annually. Procurement teams and platform engineers must prepare for AI providers to compress large portions of the systems integration stack, potentially reducing incumbents to subcontractors. This follows Anthropic's exploration of an AI consulting venture in March.
