What happened
The European Commission proposed the Programme for Agile and Rapid Defence Innovation (AGILE), allocating €115 million in an initial pilot phase to accelerate disruptive defence technologies. AGILE targets AI, quantum, and drone projects, funding 20 to 30 initiatives with €1 million to €5 million each. The programme streamlines funding decisions to months, allows single companies to apply, and covers up to 100% of eligible costs, including retroactive funding, aiming for deployment within one to three years.
Why it matters
EU defence procurement shifts towards rapid deployment, directly addressing the bloc's slow innovation cycles. Procurement teams gain faster access to critical capabilities, as AGILE's streamlined process and 100% cost coverage enable startups and SMEs to deliver advanced AI, quantum, and drone technologies within three years. This contrasts with past projects like the Eurodrone, conceived in 2015 but facing significant delays, leaving member states reliant on external suppliers. Security architects must now integrate rapidly evolving, domestically sourced defence tech.
