The UK's new Strategic Defence Review prioritises 'warfighting readiness' amidst rising global threats. The plan includes significant investment in AI, drone technology, and cyber capabilities, aiming for a military that is '10 times more lethal'. A key element is the creation of a 'New Hybrid Navy' featuring SSN-AUKUS submarines and autonomous vessels. The review also addresses the need for faster innovation and procurement, measured in months rather than years. The goal is to transform the UK into a leading tech-enabled military power by 2035, with digitally connected forces.
To achieve this, the UK will increase defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027, with ambitions to reach 3% in the next Parliament. This investment will support the development of up to 12 new nuclear-powered attack submarines under the AUKUS program, as well as the establishment of six new munitions factories. The review emphasises a 'NATO First' approach, while also strengthening industrial partnerships with allies. The government aims to reverse the hollowing out of the armed forces and prepare for a more dangerous world.
The Strategic Defence Review outlines a new approach to British Army warfighting, centred around a drone-centric strategy. Uncrewed systems will be deployed for initial attacks, followed by tanks, attack helicopters, and other crewed platforms. The review also calls for the establishment of a 'cyber and electromagnetic command' to enhance the military's defensive and offensive capabilities in cyberspace, addressing the increasing number of cyber-attacks on UK military networks.
