EdgeCortix, a Tokyo-based AI chip startup, is receiving increased support to advance Japanese semiconductor technology for defence applications. The company specialises in energy-efficient AI processing, offering AI accelerators and software for AI inference on heterogeneous systems, with a focus on generative AI and dynamic neural acceleration. EdgeCortix's solutions target industries including defence, aerospace, smart cities, and autonomous vehicles.

The company's core technology includes the Dynamic Neural Accelerator (DNA), a runtime reconfigurable neural network processor IP, and the SAKURA AI co-processor. These products form an integrated platform suited for real-time AI applications with streaming data, such as high-resolution cameras, robotics, signal processing, and generative AI systems. EdgeCortix has also secured a contract with the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to evaluate and deploy its hardware and software solutions across various Department of Defense applications, marking the first time a Japanese company has received such an award.

EdgeCortix recently received a 4 Billion Yen subsidy from Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to advance energy-efficient AI chiplets for post-5G communication systems. This funding will support the development of the SAKURA-X platform, integrating AI processing with RAN acceleration, aiming for a fivefold reduction in energy consumption compared to current solutions.
