What happened
Napa Valley Unified School District's board approved a new policy for artificial intelligence use in schools, voting 5-1 on March 26. The policy permits AI as a tool to enhance learning and support staff, not replace them, while prioritising ethics, equitable access, and academic honesty. It outlines 10 guiding principles, including transparent use, accountability, and continuous evaluation, mirroring recommendations from the California School Board Association. An AI council of 30 stakeholders informed the policy's development since May 2025.
Why it matters
Educational institutions face a new standard for AI integration, balancing innovation with academic integrity. For ed-tech founders, this policy signals a market demand for tools that align with explicit ethical frameworks and support, rather than circumvent, student learning. School administrators gain a framework for managing AI adoption, requiring professional development for staff and ongoing community engagement. Procurement teams must now prioritise AI solutions demonstrating transparent bias mitigation and secure data privacy controls, moving beyond simple utility.
