What happened
The College Board, developer of the SAT and Advanced Placement programmes, released three research briefs detailing generative AI adoption in US education. Surveys from 2024 and 2025 found 84% of high school students use GenAI for schoolwork, and 74% of college faculty report student use for writing. Only 38% of college faculty use AI for teaching materials, with just one in five feeling confident guiding its classroom use.
Why it matters
Widespread student adoption of generative AI, without clear institutional guidance, creates significant academic integrity risks. High school principals universally express concern over academic integrity, with 90% also worried about teacher preparedness. This disparity between student usage and educator confidence limits effective AI integration, requiring academic leaders and procurement teams to prioritise developing enforceable policies and comprehensive training programmes for faculty. This follows Google's recent initiative to train 2 million US people in AI skills, highlighting the scale of the challenge.
