What happened
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is progressing its Strategic Management of Airspace Routing Trajectories (SMART) AI system, with Palantir Technologies, Thales SA, and Air Space Intelligence Inc. competing to develop the tool. This system aims to predict air traffic conflicts up to two hours in advance, a significant extension from the current 15-minute window. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg confirmed the initiative, part of a broader $32.5 billion modernisation programme for US airspace, with potential operational deployment later this year.
Why it matters
This shift from reactive to proactive air traffic management addresses controller shortages and enhances safety and efficiency in US airspace. For platform engineers and procurement teams, this represents a substantial government contract opportunity for AI deployment in critical national infrastructure. The system's ability to provide extended lead times for conflict resolution fundamentally alters operational planning for air traffic management, reducing delays and improving safety metrics.
