What happened
Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan stated at the 11th Raisina Dialogue that Artificial Intelligence and autonomous systems will play a decisive role in future conflicts, already impacting current warfare. Chauhan emphasised that modern combat, spanning physical, synthetic, and cognitive realms, demands rapid decision-making, which AI-powered automated systems facilitate. He noted the substantial energy requirements for AI, suggesting nuclear power complements data centres, and acknowledged India is taking "baby steps" in AI, still formulating its strategic use.
Why it matters
National defence strategists face a shift in military capability, prioritising data, networks, and intelligence alongside traditional platforms. The CDS's remarks underscore that timely, accurate decision-making in multi-domain combat now hinges on AI and autonomous systems, creating new demands for technology integration and energy infrastructure. For energy sector planners, the "huge requirement for energy" to power AI data centres presents a critical, complementary role for nuclear power. This follows recent discussions on India's prioritisation of AI in defence.
