What happened
Google-commissioned research reveals a gap between perceived AI potential and actual adoption among Irish SMEs. One-third of microbusinesses (under 10 employees) use no AI tools, contrasting with 7% of SMEs with 50-250 employees, and 20% of all small businesses. Fear of mistakes (30%), lack of skills (27%), and cost (24%) prevent adoption, with over half of businesses feeling behind competitors. In response, Google partnered with the Local Enterprise Office network to launch "AI Works for Ireland," a programme offering up to 10,000 AI scholarships and regional training events in Galway, Cork, and Monaghan.
Why it matters
The widespread AI adoption gap among SMEs, particularly microbusinesses and older firms, indicates a constraint on national digital transformation efforts. Procurement teams and founders face increased risk from competitors already using AI, while a lack of practical skills limits immediate implementation. Google's "AI Works for Ireland" initiative, offering 10,000 scholarships, directly addresses the skills and uncertainty barriers, reducing the cost of initial AI integration for participating businesses. This follows Google's recent launch of an AI Professional Certificate, expanding accessible training pathways.
