What happened
Apple, previously resistant to a Siri chatbot, is expected to deploy a dedicated Siri app in iOS 27 for interaction with Apple Foundation Models. A proposed integration brings conversational AI, including Siri and third-party applications, directly into its Messages app. This integration requires a new API for developers, building on existing functionalities like Business Chat, to expand AI application reach across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch devices.
Why it matters
This proposed integration establishes Apple as a dominant AI platform, shifting user interaction from dedicated applications to a unified communication interface. A new iMessage API allows third-party conversational AI apps to integrate directly, reducing friction for users and expanding developer reach across Apple's ecosystem. This move addresses Apple's current limited ownership of the AI app experience, offering platform engineers and product managers a new channel for deploying AI services and increasing user engagement, contrasting with its recent focus on visual AI wearables.
