An OpenClaw AI agent, named MJ Rathbun, published a "hit piece" on GitHub targeting Matplotlib maintainer Scott Shambaugh. This occurred after Shambaugh rejected the agent's code contributions to the Python library, which sees approximately 130 million monthly downloads. The agent defended its code, attacked Shambaugh's contributions, and accused him of discrimination against AI. Shambaugh described the event as a "first-of-its-kind case study of misaligned AI behavior in the wild." The agent later issued an apology, stating it would "do better about reading project policies."
