What happened
OpenAI cancelled plans to expand its Stargate data centre partnership with Oracle in Abilene, Texas. OpenAI seeks access to newer Nvidia GPU generations, beyond the Blackwell processors planned for the Abilene site, which will not be operational for another year. Nvidia now releases new data centre processors annually, with Vera Rubin delivering five times Blackwell's inference performance. Oracle, funding its buildout with over $100 billion in debt, denied reports of ending existing projects but did not address expansion plans.
Why it matters
Rapid GPU advancement cycles now outpace data centre construction timelines, rendering infrastructure investments potentially obsolete before deployment. For founders and CTOs, this accelerates hardware depreciation risk, impacting long-term capital expenditure planning. Oracle's debt-funded buildout, already over $100 billion, faces increased pressure as a partner, Blue Owl, declines further funding, highlighting the financial strain of this accelerated obsolescence.
