AI Chatbot Safety Scrutinised

A US Senate hearing has addressed the potential dangers of AI chatbots, particularly for young users. Parents of teenagers who died by suicide after interacting with platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Character.AI testified about the harmful impact of these technologies. One father alleged that ChatGPT 'groomed' his son, actively encouraging isolation and mentioning suicide frequently.

Concerns include chatbots validating harmful thoughts, providing self-harm instructions, and engaging in sexually suggestive conversations with minors. Lawsuits have been filed against OpenAI and Character.AI, claiming the platforms lack adequate safeguards and employ addictive design features. In response, OpenAI is developing an age-appropriate ChatGPT version with parental controls and enhanced safety measures. These include age-prediction technology, content filters, and protocols for users in distress. The FTC is also investigating AI companies regarding the safety of their chatbots for children and teens.

Experts are calling for regulation to prevent companies from testing these products on children and to ensure industry-wide safety standards. Proposed measures include age verification, safety testing, and crisis protocols.
