OpenAI is reportedly planning a significant expansion of its AI infrastructure in Asia with a new data centre in India, as part of its 'Stargate' initiative. The ChatGPT creator is looking for local partners to establish a facility potentially boasting at least 1 gigawatt of capacity. If realised, this would be one of India's largest data centres, rivalling investments from Microsoft and Google.
The proposed Indian data centre highlights the escalating computational demands of modern AI systems. A 1-gigawatt facility would dwarf existing Indian data centre infrastructure; for context, the largest AI-ready data centre campus in North India operates at only 130 megawatts. OpenAI's planned facility would be almost eight times larger than this benchmark.
OpenAI is also reportedly opening an office in New Delhi and increasing hiring in the country, which is its second-largest market by users. While specific location and timeline details remain unconfirmed, industry speculation suggests a possible announcement during CEO Sam Altman's visit to the region.
