OpenAI is partnering with India's Ministry of Education to distribute 500,000 ChatGPT licenses to students and educators. The initiative aims to enhance AI literacy and promote critical thinking within the Indian education system. This 'India-first' initiative, called 'OpenAI Learning Accelerator', will provide ChatGPT access to teachers in government schools for lesson planning and student engagement. Technical institutes will also gain access to strengthen digital skills and AI application.
OpenAI is providing a ₹4.5 crore grant to IIT Madras for AI research to study how AI can improve learning outcomes and teaching methods. The research will align with cognitive neuroscience insights, informing future product development. The company will also partner with the Association for Reinventing School Education (ARISE) to provide ChatGPT access to K-12 educators.
This expansion includes opening an office in New Delhi and launching an India-specific ChatGPT Go subscription at ₹399 per month. OpenAI is also collaborating with the Ministry of Electronics and IT on a nationwide AI literacy program. The company's GPT-5 model demonstrates improved performance in Indic languages, with ChatGPT supporting 11 Indian languages.
