OpenAI is launching a new program in India to provide free access to ChatGPT for 500,000 students and teachers. This initiative aims to enhance learning, support educators, and integrate AI more effectively into classrooms. The program, called the OpenAI Learning Accelerator, marks one of OpenAI's largest education-focused efforts.
Through partnerships with the Ministry of Education, AICTE, and ARISE member schools, OpenAI will distribute ChatGPT licenses to government schools, technical colleges, and K-12 schools across India. This will give teachers access to premium ChatGPT features for lesson planning and student engagement, while students can utilise advanced tools like Study Mode and interactive quizzes. OpenAI is also collaborating with IIT Madras, providing a research grant to study AI's impact on teaching and learning.
Raghav Gupta, formerly of Coursera India & Asia Pacific, has been appointed as Head of Education for India and APAC to lead this initiative. OpenAI will also open its first Indian office in New Delhi. The company aims to make AI a tool that supports deeper understanding and prepares students for an AI-driven future.
