AI and drone technology have significantly accelerated the search and recovery process in the Italian Alps. After a hiker went missing for nearly a year, the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps deployed drones to capture 2,600 images of the search area. AI software then analysed these images, identifying colour anomalies, such as the missing hiker's helmet, which would have taken humans weeks or months to find manually.
The AI pinpointed a red object in the images, which was confirmed to be the hiker's helmet at approximately 3,150 meters elevation. The integration of AI with drones marks a significant advancement in search and rescue operations, enhancing the effectiveness of traditional methods. This technology not only brought closure to the hiker's family but also demonstrated AI's potential to solve previously insurmountable cases.
