OpenAI and Anthropic are intensifying their competition in the AI coding space, each striving to provide superior AI models for developers. Anthropic has gained ground with Claude, particularly Claude Code, which is becoming a favourite among coders. Its capabilities allow users to create web applications and handle infrastructure-related tasks efficiently.
However, Anthropic has recently blocked OpenAI's access to the Claude API, alleging a violation of its terms of service. OpenAI's technical staff were reportedly using Claude Code, potentially to enhance the coding capabilities of their upcoming GPT-5 model. Anthropic's terms of service prohibit using their services to build competing products or reverse engineer their technology. Despite this, Anthropic will continue to allow OpenAI API access for benchmarking and safety evaluations.
GPT-5 is anticipated to launch soon with enhanced reasoning and automated modes. Meanwhile, Anthropic's Claude models are gaining traction in enterprise environments, especially for coding applications. The rivalry highlights the increasing importance of AI-powered coding tools and the strategic competition between leading AI developers.
