Anthropic has revoked OpenAI's access to its Claude AI models, alleging a violation of its terms of service. The move comes just before the anticipated launch of OpenAI's GPT-5 model. Anthropic's terms permit API access for tasks like benchmarking and safety evaluations but explicitly prohibit using Claude to develop competing products or for reverse engineering.
Reportedly, OpenAI used its developer access to integrate Claude into internal tools and systematically benchmark it against its own AI models. These tests spanned various tasks, including coding, creative writing, and security assessments. Anthropic had previously blocked Claude access for the coding tool Windsurf after OpenAI showed interest in acquiring it.
Anthropic's spokesperson stated that Claude Code has become a popular choice for coders, including OpenAI's technical staff. OpenAI expressed disappointment but stated they respect Anthropic's decision. Anthropic's actions highlight the intensifying competition within the generative AI landscape and the strategic importance of protecting proprietary advancements.
