OpenAI is constructing a major AI data centre in Narvik, Norway, marking its first such initiative in Europe. Named 'Stargate Norway', the project is part of OpenAI's broader 'OpenAI for Countries' programme. The facility is being developed in collaboration with Nscale and Aker, with an anticipated launch in 2026.
Stargate Norway aims to deliver 230MW of capacity, potentially expanding by an additional 290MW. The data centre will house 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the end of 2026, interconnected via NVLink. This setup will support advanced AI workloads, including natural language processing and machine learning. The facility will operate entirely on renewable energy, utilising hydropower and closed-loop liquid cooling for efficiency, with excess heat redirected to local low-carbon enterprises.
Located in the Arctic Circle, Narvik offers a cool climate, low energy costs, and existing industrial infrastructure. The project aims to provide secure and scalable infrastructure for AI across Europe, aligning with European regulatory frameworks. Priority access will be given to Norway's AI ecosystem, with surplus capacity available to the UK, Nordics, and Northern Europe.
