Nagpur Police deployed artificial intelligence to solve a hit-and-run case after a video surfaced showing a man transporting his deceased wife. The police utilised the AI-MARVEL system, which analysed CCTV footage from toll points using computer vision algorithms. The system identified trucks with red markings and calculated average speeds to pinpoint the suspect vehicle.

This AI-driven approach enabled the police to track the truck to Uttar Pradesh, approximately 700km away, and arrest the driver, Satyapal Rajendra. The AI system, developed by Maharashtra, is able to analyse data quickly, speeding up investigations. Other states are now looking to adopt this model.

The MARVEL system uses AI to analyse metadata and develop solutions for law enforcement. In this instance, it overcame minimal information provided by the victim, who could only recall the truck having red markings. The AI rapidly processed CCTV data, leading to the arrest within 36 hours.
