YouTube is initiating tests in the U.S. for a new AI-driven age verification system. This system aims to differentiate between adult and minor users by analysing their viewing patterns. The AI model assesses user age, regardless of the birth date provided during account creation, and is triggered when users are logged in.
If the AI determines a user is under 18, YouTube will implement age-appropriate restrictions, including privacy warnings and limited video recommendations. Users misidentified as minors can verify their age using a government ID, credit card, or selfie. The goal is to enhance safety for younger users while respecting privacy.
This system expands on existing measures to protect young users from inappropriate content and tailored advertising. YouTube emphasises its commitment to providing a secure online environment for families. The effectiveness of the AI will be evaluated, with potential for broader implementation if successful.
