Anthropic is introducing weekly rate limits for Claude Code, its AI coding tool, effective August 28. The limits target users of the Pro, and Max subscription plans. This change responds to a small percentage of users (less than 5%) who excessively use Claude Code, sometimes running it continuously, impacting system capacity.
The new limits aim to ensure equitable access and prevent abuse, such as account sharing and reselling, which violate terms of service. While most users won't notice a difference, those with large codebases or running multiple instances may reach their limits sooner. Users exceeding the limits can purchase additional usage at standard API rates. Anthropic is also addressing recent reliability and performance issues.
Anthropic assures it remains committed to supporting long-running use cases in the future. The company may adjust usage limits as they learn more about developer use of Claude Code.
