ChatGPT Agent: AI Autonomy

28 July 2025

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Agent, a new tool designed to function as a semi-autonomous digital assistant. Available to Pro, Plus, and Team users, this feature allows ChatGPT to execute tasks, manage calendars, and create presentations. It integrates Operator's web interaction capabilities with deep research's information synthesis.

ChatGPT Agent uses a unified agentic system, combining browsing, code execution, and API interaction. It can access connectors to apps like Gmail and GitHub, enhancing its ability to manage tasks. The agent operates within a secure virtual workspace, ensuring user control and security. Users can activate 'agent mode' to assign tasks, such as planning trips or analysing data, with the AI requesting permission before taking significant actions.

This update marks a shift from chat-based assistance to a more proactive AI capable of handling complex workflows. It can navigate websites, fill forms, run code, and create editable slideshows. The agent's ability to integrate with various tools and services streamlines task management, making it a versatile assistant for both personal and professional use.
