A new European AI weather model delivers high-accuracy forecasts while using significantly less computing power than traditional methods. The Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System (AIFS) outperforms conventional systems in predicting various conditions, including temperature, precipitation, wind, and tropical cyclones.
The AI model leverages historical data to assess how initial conditions influence future weather patterns. This approach allows for faster forecast generation, taking only three minutes compared to the 30 minutes required by supercomputers for conventional outlooks. The system provides vital data for renewable energy operations, such as predicting solar radiation levels and wind speeds.
Developed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the AIFS is the first fully operational open model using machine learning for weather prediction. It complements existing physics-based models, offering improved accuracy and efficiency. The AI model's forecasts are global and used by industries and meteorologists worldwide.
