AMD plans to resume shipments of its MI308 chips to China after receiving US government approval, mirroring a similar decision for Nvidia's H20 AI chip. The US Commerce Department has indicated that AMD's license applications for the MI308 products will proceed for review. This decision marks a reversal of previous restrictions on chip sales to China. AMD previously estimated that these export restrictions on MI308 chips could cost the company approximately $800 million.
Nvidia also secured approval to ship its H20 AI chip to China, potentially adding billions to the company's revenue this year. The change in policy follows improved relations between the US and China, including discussions between Nvidia's CEO and the US administration. AMD's resumption of MI308 chip sales aims to recover potential revenue losses and capitalise on the demand for AI infrastructure in China.
