Google has launched its AI Mode in India, providing users with a more advanced search experience. This experimental feature, accessible through Google Labs in English, is powered by a custom version of Gemini 2.5. AI Mode is designed to handle complex, multi-layered queries, offering comprehensive, AI-generated responses with links for further exploration. It uses a 'query fan-out' technique, breaking down questions into subtopics and running multiple simultaneous searches.
AI Mode supports multimodal inputs, including text, voice, and images, catering to the diverse user base in India. This builds upon the success of AI Overviews, which have driven increased engagement in major markets. The company emphasises that AI Mode is rooted in existing quality and ranking systems, showing traditional search results when AI confidence is low.
Early testing in the United States showed users asking questions two to three times longer than traditional searches, indicating a shift towards more natural, conversational interactions. Google aims to continuously improve the feature based on user feedback, making search more convenient and effortless.
