Google has launched a standalone NotebookLM app for Android, ahead of Google I/O 2025. The app provides a native experience for accessing notebooks, with filters for recent, shared, titled, and downloaded content. It features light and dark modes based on the device's system theme. Notebooks are displayed as colourful cards showing the name, emoji, number of sources, and date, along with a play button for audio overviews. Users can create new notebooks by adding PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, and text. The app will also appear in the Android share sheet for quick source addition.
Inside a notebook, users will find a bottom bar for sources, chat Q&A, and studio. The app mirrors the functionality of the mobile website, allowing users to ditch the Progressive Web App. It includes phone and tablet interfaces but doesn't fully utilise Material 3. A key feature is the audio-first experience, allowing users to play AI-generated podcast-style summaries directly from the list view. Interactive Mode in audio sessions lets users ask questions mid-playback. The iOS version is expected to launch soon.
